If you’ve followed me on social media, you know that I’m a huge fan of EMDs. In fact, I built an entire career and suite of SaaS products around them.
And while Rank & Rent is one of the most talked-about business models for EMDs, there are other options available.
Over the years, I’ve met quite a few big players making tens of thousands of dollars a month.
What I want to show you in this post is how you can maximize business profits with EMDs through some innovative strategies I’ve learned from these people.
The best part is that my process is massively automated, meaning that you can scale any of these business models without building large teams.
Let’s dive right in.
The Four Profitable EMD Plays
All of these strategies work well on their own, but I have found that stacking them into your business gives you insane leverage and scalability.
Strategy 1: Rank & Rent
Rank & Rent is the classic “digital real estate” play, and it still works ridiculously well when you execute it properly.
You register an EMD in a specific niche and location, build a simple site that targets the money keywords, and optimize it to generate calls and form leads.
Once the leads start coming in, you rent the site to a local business owner who wants consistent enquiries without having to become an SEO expert or spending a ton of money on ads.
What makes this model powerful is the profit structure.
Instead of getting paid once for building a site, you get paid every month for an asset you own and control. If the renter stops paying, you don’t lose the asset.
You simply reroute the leads and rent the site to another business in the same area. That gives you leverage, stability, and bargaining power.
The tricky part of this strategy is finding the right EMD for a keyword with decent search volume, low competition, and the ability to build a highly converting website cheaply and quickly.
That might sound like a unicorn situation, but I have a solution for you coming up.
Strategy 2: Build-And-Sell
Build-and-sell is an EMD strategy where you create a small site, get it to some SERP traction, and then sell it as a finished asset.
The point isn’t to create a “perfect website,” it’s to create something a buyer can look at and immediately understand.
If anything, leaving some room for improvement makes an EMD more sellable as buyers can see scope for boosting revenue.
It’s like those real estate flipping TV shows where people find decent homes, do mainly decorative work, and then turn a profit.
You pick a niche and location with clear commercial intent, then publish the core pages that match what Google is already rewarding in that SERP.
You set up call and form tracking from day one, because “trust me, bro” isn’t a business metric.
Once the site has proof (calls, forms, rankings for money KWs, or steady impressions and clicks), you’ve turned it into something that can be valued.
A clean build matters here because buyers want a simple handoff, not a scavenger hunt through plugins, broken pages, and mystery redirects.
Your job is to package the asset like a business, with clear tracking access, a lead log, and a short summary of what’s driving results.
This can be a great strategy for people who struggle to sell to local business owners, as it can be easier to sell to SEOs.
Just keep in mind that your profit won’t be as high as the long-term value provided by a rank & rent asset.
Strategy 3: Agency Accelerator
Agency Accelerator is where you use EMD sites as an extra lead channel for clients you already serve with local SEO.
Instead of pitching a brand-new service to cold prospects, you add a second asset that feeds the same business, which makes the sale easier.
Believe me, once you’ve delivered quality work to a client and they are happy with the results, it’s like taking candy from a toddler when it comes to selling them more leads.
What business doesn’t want more leads?
The client already trusts you, already wants more calls, and already understands the value of leads, so the conversation is simple.
You pick a winnable niche-and-location KW, register the EMD, and build a focused site designed to convert.
It’s zero risk for the client, and you get to keep the asset if they ever decide to leave.
Because you’re working with an existing customer, you can position it as an “add-on lead engine,” not a complicated rebuild.
This also reduces churn, because it’s hard to cancel a provider who is sending you measurable enquiries every month.
And yes, it’s a lot more fun to sell “here are the leads” than “please give me six months and I promise this will be great.”
Strategy 4: Domain Investing
Domain investing is all about arbitrage, which is a fancy way of saying you buy something for less than it’s worth and sell it to someone who values it more.
Like in those TV shows where people go to estate sales to get valuable items at bargain prices.
With EMDs, that “value gap” usually comes from commercial intent, local demand, and the fact that most people don’t know how to judge opportunities properly.
The real skill is spotting diamonds in the rough before they get priced like diamonds.
That means you’re not just hunting for a nice-sounding domain, you’re hunting for a domain tied to a winnable SERP and a profitable service.
Here’s how you can take real advantage of this approach.
Using a tool like KillerEMD (more on this below), you find those diamonds in the rough with:
- Great search volume
- Strong buyer intent
- Winnable SERPs
- And an available EMD
The next common step is to register the domain quickly and approach business owners, web design agencies, or SEOs to see if anyone is interested in buying it.
That can be tricky and time-consuming; two things I hate in business processes.
So, the better option is to immediately build a highly optimized website with real content and quality images using Agent X.
For less than $25 and in just 15 minutes of sipping your coffee, you’ll have a ready-to-rank website.
I’ve seen Agent X sites jump to page one in Google within days. Here are a few examples.
That kind of ranking proof adds instant value, and you can then sell the domain with the site for a much higher price than just the domain alone.
The “Profit Filter”: How To Pick The Right EMD Opportunity
The profit filter starts by ignoring “green” difficulty scores from other SEO tools that more often than not result in making mistakes.
Instead, scan the SERPs for real signs of weakness:
- Directories
- Abandoned pages
- Thin competitors
- Reddit posts
- Unrelated national websites
Next, sanity-check visibility and intent: if ads, maps, and AI answers bury organic results, even a top rank may deliver fewer clicks than the volume suggests.
Then confirm the keyword has enough search volume to produce leads and that businesses are actually spending money on ads; this is a critical indicator that a niche has good value.
Finally, validate buyer intent and rental value by tying the query to a service where one new customer is worth real money, making each call a sellable asset.
That’s easier said than done, but I have a great solution for this.
The Automated Approach To Finding Profitable EMDs
All of the above strategies come down to one thing: finding profitable EMD opportunities at scale.
But it’s the scaling part that is tough, and that’s why I built a tool to automate most of the work I used to do manually.
KillerEMD essentially lets you enter a location or niche and then find thousands of keywords for local business services.
You then pick the ones that look promising, and KillerEMD then calculates a Kill Score.
The higher this score is, the more profitable the niche and the easier it is to rank.
This only takes a few seconds, and you have the perfect indicator to help focus your attention on the KWs that are likely to provide the fastest results.
KillerEMD also tells you which TLDs are available to register immediately, and it includes a calculator for working out what kind of rental value you would get from building a site and selling the leads.
Basically, in less than a minute, you have multiple options for new business opportunities with all the background research done.
Start Using Killer EMD For Free
EMDs can still produce reliable cash flow when you pair them with the right model and a repeatable profit filter.
The four plays are Rank & Rent for recurring monthly revenue, Build-and-Sell for asset flips with proof, Agency Accelerator for adding a second lead engine to existing clients, and Domain Investing for arbitrage on winnable names.
The key is to ignore KD scores and judge real SERP weakness, intent, volume, and rental value before you register anything.
KillerEMD automates the research by generating local service keywords, scoring opportunities with a Kill Score, checking EMD availability, and estimating rental value.
