Most people treat their PBNs like a simple numbers game: create enough PBN sites and add backlinks, and something will stick and increase your rankings.
That may have worked in the early days of PBNs, but Google has gotten a lot smarter when it comes to evaluating backlinks.
The truth is that without topical relevance mapping, your PBN links might be significantly devalued.
That’s why I have been using a simple process to ensure relevance for all my PBNs.
In this post, I’ll show you exactly why it’s important, how to bridge topical gaps, and why Xagio makes it so much easier using AI.
Why Relevance Matters In PBN Content
When I first started using PBNs over 10 years ago, all you had to do was add a crappy short article with a link, and you’d get almost instant results in your rankings.
But, in today’s SEO landscape, that kind of approach will land you in trouble very quickly.
What I mean is that completely unrelated or irrelevant content surrounding a link will, at the very least, significantly dilute the link juice that gets passed on.
The solution is to create content for the PBN site that covers the same topic as your money site.
Here’s an example.
Let’s say you’re trying to rank a lead-gen site in the plumbing industry. You’d want to create a PBN post about construction and cover some aspects of commercial plumbing.
But that creates another challenge.
If your PBN site is about greenhouse gardening, does it really make sense to have a blog post about commercial plumbing solutions?
The challenge here is coming up with a topic that bridges the topical gap between the PBN and money sites.
And that’s what relevance mapping is about.
What Is Relevance Mapping?
Relevance mapping is the process of strategically planning PBN content to align with the topics and keywords of your target site.
Instead of randomly writing articles and inserting backlinks, you create a content outline that incorporates a related keyword to your money site while logically bridging the gap to the PBN site’s general topic.
Taking the example from above, where we have a PBN site that is mainly about greenhouse gardening and we’re trying to link to a commercial plumbing service, there are some creative ways to bridge that gap.
You could have an article that talks about how commercial plumbing solutions served as a blueprint for a greenhouse irrigation system.
Then, make half of the article about the greenhouse solution and the other half about commercial plumbing, and you’ve logically bridged the gap.
You need some creative skills for this, but AI can significantly help you with this as well.
How To Plan PBN Content With Relevance In Mind
Up until a few years ago, I had to spend quite a bit of creative time to come up with ideas, or hire writers to do this for me.
But with AI, this has become so much easier.
Basically, all you have to do now is tell ChatGPT what your PBN site is about and then what kind of money site or page you’re linking to.
Then, ask for topics and titles for blog articles between 500 and 1000 words long that bridge the gap.
Here is what one of these prompts might look like:
“I need 5 topic and title suggestions for a blog post on a PBN site about greenhouse gardening. The blog post needs to link to a plumbing business with the anchor text “commercial plumbing Miami” and I need you to apply relevance mapping to bridge those two topics.”
You can experiment a bit more with the wording over time, but this will give you some great topics to use AI for in the content creation part.
Or, you could use Xagio to make that part even easier.
How Xagio Streamlines Relevance Mapping For PBNs
Let me now show you exactly what I do to make sure my PBN posts are perfectly relevant to both the PBN and money site content.
Step 1: Define The Topic
I already mentioned that ChatGPT is a great tool for saving you time on relevance mapping, and we’ll use the above prompt again.
“I need 5 topic and title suggestions for a blog post on a PBN site about greenhouse gardening. The blog post needs to link to a plumbing business with the anchor text “commercial plumbing Miami” and I need you to apply relevance mapping to bridge those two topics.”
Here’s what the output looks like, and you simply have to choose one of the topic suggestions.
Let’s just choose the first one and slightly modify the title “Smart Water Systems for Greenhouse Gardening: Lessons from Commercial Plumbing” before we move to the next step.
Step 2: Create A New PBN Post From The Xagio Cloud App
Head to your Xagio Cloud App dashboard and click on the Websites tab where you’ll find all PBN sites linked to your account.
Find the site you want to add a new post to and then click on the “Manage” button.
Simply navigate to the “Posts/Pages” tab and then click on the “+” button to create a new blog post.
On the next screen, you simply add in the title and a description of what you want the content to cover.
Step 3: Let AI Write The Article
At the bottom of this screen you should also set the writing style and content tone for the article.
Once you click “Generate” Xagio will take the title and description and then use AI to write an article in the style and tone you chose.
In just a few seconds, you’ll have a relevance-mapped piece of content that just requires some basic formatting and the addition of the outbound link.
The whole process should take no more than a minute.
Compare that to manually coming up with the topic and then spending another hour or so writing it.
